OAP supports and adheres to the WCO statement on stand-alone refraction
The WORLD COUNCIL OF OPTOMETRY - WCO has a clear policy to develop the optometric workforce. WCO acknowledges that in some developing countries, and particularly in rural areas, there are insufficient clinicians to carry out refraction as part of a complete (or comprehensive) eye examination which includes detecting the early signs of disease and abnormality. However, WCO believes strongly that ‘stand-alone refraction’, without an eye health examination that includes an eye health examination is a serious public health issue. WCO knows, through its relations with Governments and professionals in developing countries, that the public believe they have had a complete eye examination if they have been refracted, thus reducing the potential for early identification of potentially sight-threatening disease.
